Jay Howard, a seasoned auto racer himself, has been spending time this season working with Chastain Motorsports engineering race cars and coaching drivers. While the team mainly runs the F1600 open wheel series this year, they will be testing F2000 cars in the very near future, with plans to race the full 2015 season. Using his focused skill set tuned to development of drivers, Howard is looking to help the team’s current drivers, Brandon Newey and Sam Chastain, reach their full potentials.
Just a few short weeks ago, Chastain Motorsports travelled to Alton, Virginia to race at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR). The team began their time racing at the challenging venue with good fortune, with Brandon Newey qualifying for Saturday’s race on the pole position by posting the fast lap of the timed session, a new track record. In Saturday’s race, Newey proceeded to lead the entire event, from flag to flag to take the victory. Teammate Sam Chastain qualified in outside row three in the sixth position and held station for the majority of the race and would battle at the front of the field eventually scoring a top-ten result.
Sunday’s events proved just as rewarding for Chastain Motorsports. Once again, Brandon Newey claimed pole position in qualifying, besting his own fast lap time from the day before by 0.1 seconds and setting another track record. Sam Chastain slotted himself in the second position until the very end of the qualifying session where he was pushed back to P4. Newey had another fantastic run in Sunday’s main event as he led the entire race until the last lap, when he was pushed out of line by two other cars and finished second, missing the win by only a foot. Sam drove most of the race in the front of the pack, while a brief excursion off track pushed him back into eighth place where he would end his weekend.
Team Chastain Motorsports ended the weekend strong. Not only with a win, two podiums and four top-ten results, the team would also set lap records on Saturday and then reset the mark on Sunday to top off the event.
Team Chastain Motorsports hopes to take the momentum of this fantastic weekend into the next round of the F1600 series at Mid Ohio. Joining the team at the next race will be Jay Howard’s Motorsports Driver Development (MDD) driver Evan Mehan. Mehan has been testing with Chastain Motorsports for some time now and Howard is confident that his skills will place him as a frontrunner right from the get go.
